By Daniel Schlenger
I needed a true RAID server for my business. As you know servers can get pricey in a hurry. I did a lot of research looking at different options and couldn't find anything better than this HP server. I was concerned about reliability and then speed. The server came with Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation. Foundation works like the regular version but is limited to 8 GB of RAM even though the server holds up to 16. That wasn't an issue for my purposes considering that Foundation came with the already reasonably priced server and the full version of Server 2008 was several hundred dollars by itself.
Setup isn't as easy as a desktop. First you will need a hard drive or two and you will need to purchase HP trays. I found a alternate source for the drives and trays as the ones from HP were not very cheap. I also found after market RAM as most of these come with 2-4 GB. Just make sure you match the RAM specs exactly or they won't work. Once I had the drives in place and started the setup process, I discovered that I would need SmartStart that you can download from HP from another computer and copy to a CD. This program activates the RAID in BIOS and speeds along the rest of the computer configuration. You will probably need an ISO burner program to properly make the CD. I think I used PowerISO.
Windows Server 2008 looks a lot like Windows 7 so most of it will be familiar. The hardware and OS all feel more robust than a desktop of a similar price. I ended up buying and setting up one for my son's business and bought another one as a mirror to my primary server. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this one again.
